The Hunger Games: My Newest Book Obsession

God, I love reading.  I can read anywhere.  Standing in line at the airport.  At the grocery store.  At the Doctors office.  (I go there a lot these days!)  My favorite app is the Kindle.  I love that I can read my book on either my iPhone or iPad.  I love that each device knows exactly where I am in the book.  I ♥ my Kindle app!

Until recently, I’ve never thought of myself as a science fiction kind of girl.

I think Trekkies are weird.

Who the %^$ is Doctor Who?

And then I read the Harry Potter series.  After finishing all seven books, I loathed saying goodbye to the boy who lived in the closet beneath the stairs.  My love of Harry Potter then led me to the Twilight trilogy.  I ripped through those three books like a woman possessed by an unquenchable thirst for more Bella, Jacob and Edward.

And from Twilight, I found A Discovery of Witches.  Have you read the book?  SO GOOD!  I was so pissed when that book ended.  I couldn’t believe it left off where it did.  The author, Deborah Harkness, teaches at USC here in SoCal.  She also writes a wine blog.  I sense that we’d be very good friends if we ever met.  The follow-up to A Discovery of Witches comes out this summer.  I CANNOT WAIT! (Note to her Publicist and Publisher:  Please,  please,  please,  pretty please send me a review copy!)

After finishing Witches, I was craving more fiction of the other-wordly sort, a book with a kick-ass heroine and fantastic plot line. Many friends had recommended The Hunger Games, but from their initial descriptions of the books, I didn’t think I’d like them.  Turns out that I do.  I finished the first book in the series in less than 12 hours.  I can’t believe I found 12 constant hours to read, but I did.  Obsessively.  And now I’ve started the second book in the series, Catching Fire.

The Hunger Games comes out in theaters later this month.  I typically don’t like film adaptations of books, but the trailer for the film looks great.  Katniss, the main character, looks just like I’ve imagined her in my head!  I look forward to seeing the film and finishing the books.

What are you reading?  I’d love some recommendations for my next book.  (After I finish The Hunger Games of course!)
