If you loved “Gone Girl” you will love….

Happy New Year! (Yes, very belatedly!) I’m happy to get back to blogging and writing about things that make me happy.  In order to find more time to write, I’m going to focus on writing shorter posts about things that I love:  food, cooking, dining, wine, fitness and reading.

I devoured the book “Gone Girl,” by Gillian Flynn.  Have you read it?  If not, go to Pages and pick it up.  You won’t regret it!

Since finishing the book, I’ve been searching for that next “can’t stop reading” book.  I found it:

The One I Left Behind

I really enjoyed Jennifer McMahon‘s “The One I Left Behind.”  It’s a tight thriller.  I think I finished it in two days.  (Sometimes insomnia is a good thing – like when you want to finish a fabulous book!)

If you have a book recommendation – please pass it along.  I’m always looking for my next obsession!

Another word for trash…

Trash day is so not fun here in the sand section of Manhattan Beach. The tight alleys and countless construction crews make it tough to naviagate around the monster trucks.  It can’t be easy to drive the trucks either.

I spotted this trash can a few weeks ago, and it summed it all up:

Is Manhattan Beach Annoying?

Three people found my blog yesterday using the search term “Why is Manhattan Beach so annoying?”

I feel really blessed to live here in this amazing little city by the sea.  I am not annoyed by this place.  Are you?  If so, why?  What bugs you about Manhattan Beach?

Better yet, tell me what you love about Manhattan Beach….

Wordless Wednesday: Manhattan Beach Icons

Word.

The cat is not fat

Pasha the cat has a problem.   People call Pasha fat.

But really, he’s not.

He’s big-boned.  He’s not fat.

See?  Told you.

Pasha the not fat cat lives in kitty heaven, otherwise known as the Pet Food Market, which is located in the same plaza as Fresh Brothers in Manhattan Beach.

He has a difficult job.

Sigh.

There are naps to take.

Customers to be greeted.

And short strolls throughout the store to ensure that dogs have not encroached on his territory…

The Pet Food Market is a wonderful place to search for anything and everything you might need for your beloved pet.  Stop by and visit with Pasha next time you are in the area.  Just don’t call him fat.  ‘Cause he’s not.

Zenka Nails: A Hidden Gem in Manhattan Beach

Ahhhh… that looks wonderful, doesn’t it?  This is the outdoor treatment area at Zenka Nails, a glamorous little salon tucked away inside Trilogy Spa in Manhattan Beach.

I recently wrote about my obsession with Pinterest, and my collection of pins featuring fabulous nail designs and pretty polishes.  My quest for nice nails led me to Zenka, which is owned by Manhattan Beach mom, Emi Wayner.

I was invited to enjoy a spa manicure.  It was a wonderful experience and my nails look great.

It’s clear that the aging process has begun and my hands look like granny hands.  But that’s a whole other blog post….

Need a mani pedi?

Emi has kindly put together a special offer for Manhattan Beach Momma’s readers:

1.  FREE express manicure with any pedicure service
2.  $50 Hot Stone Shellac Manicure (It comes with 10 min hot stone massage) for ONLY $30

Offer is valid from today through the end of February.

Pinterest Reveals Obsession with Nail Polish and Shiny, Fancy Fingers

I signed up for Pinterest.  Who hasn’t, at this point?

It seems that every day I have at least ten new friends who are tacking onto the Pinterest virtual bulletin board.

I love “pinning” images of cool homes, nifty craft projects like the igloo made out of milk jugs & gorgeous purses and sequined shirts.  My Pinterest picks make me seems fairly fabulous.  In real life, I wear yoga pants and dog slobber-stained hoodies.  Pinterest is a virtual vacation for my brain.

I’ve noticed that the things that really catch my eye these days are cool nail designs and beautiful nail polish colors.  Maybe it’s because I’ve never had long nails.  Maybe it’s because I never really wore color on my nails until recently.  But now when I visit Pinterest, I head straight to the  “Hair & Beauty” boards.  I just can’t help myself.  Here are two of my collections of color and nail art:

Don’t you love that design on the top left corner?  And how about that blue color on the right?  I don’t love the matte, but I love that shade of indigo.

butter LONDON makes the most incredible nail polish.  Check out those colors!  See that blue-ish silver shade second from the left? That’s called “Knackered.”  I love it!  I declare that the best nail polish name ever!

This new nail obsession led me to search for a nail salon here in the South Bay that offered high quality products and fantastic nail design.  I found it – Zenka Nail Salon, tucked away inside Trilogy Spa in the Metlox Plaza.

Come back tomorrow, and I’ll tell you about Zenka.  Emi Wayner, the owner of the salon, has put together a special deal for readers of Manhattan Beach Momma.  Lucky us!

Never Second Guess Your Gut Instinct

We all do it.   We question ourselves.  We think we’re overreacting.  Overprotective.  Crazy, even.  But we’re not.

Should I let him ride his skateboard down that hill?  Well, he has a helmet on.  He’s got his pads on.  He will probably fall.  Maybe he can do it.  I should let him do it and see what happens.

There is a twitch in our gut that tells us something isn’t quite right.  Maybe it’s a simple thing like skateboarding down a hill.  Maybe it’s something more daunting, like walking home from summer camp alone.  We question that feeling – it’s so fleeting – and yet, so powerful.  Am I right? Am I going overboard?  Am I paranoid?  I’m paranoid, right?

It’s easy to squelch that feeling, especially when we’re busy, or caught up in our own thoughts.  Sometimes I’ve said yes to something my kids have asked for and then two seconds later I snap out of my revery and realize, no I don’t want them to watch Ben 10, again.  The answer becomes no.

This week, Leiby Kletzy, a nine year-old boy,  was kidnapped and murdered by a monster  a man named Levi Aron.  Leiby was walking home alone from summer camp through his tight-knit Orthodox Jewish neighborhood in Brooklyn.  This was the first time Leiby had walked alone in the city by himself.  This is where the gut instinct comes in.

Leiby’s parents walked the route from summer camp with him.  He had a specific meeting point where he was to join his mom.  It was a short walk through a safe neighborhood.  The Kletzy parents did everything right.  Leiby did everything as instructed.  But he got lost.  Or confused.  And this is where the best laid plans went wrong.  He met a real-life monster, Levi Aron, who took advantage of the situation.

I can’t stop thinking about the horror and fear that this boy must have felt in his last hours.  And, his parents.  How they must hurt.

I pray for Leiby.  I pray for his parents.  I will remember this lesson.  I hope you will too:

Never second guess your gut instinct.  If you need to rehearse a walk home from camp, it’s probably not the right thing to do.  You can make a perfect plan in a safe neighborhood, and there are still monsters along the way.

It’s our job to remember that there are real-life monsters – pedophiles, murderers.  There are no borders that keep these evil and sick people away from our children.  We are the border.

Under the Sea Juice in the City Deal

Just had to share this deal for Under the Sea, a fantabulous indoor playground here in Manhattan Beach.  Juice in the City is offering 10 admissions for $45.00, which is half off the normal cost!

Also, I occasionally write for MomsLA, a group of amazing mom bloggers who tell stories about life here in Southern California.  Today, my recipe for Grilled Peaches is a featured article.  It’s a quick and easy dessert that your kids will love.  I promise!

Enjoy!

* The Juice in the City deal is brought to you through my affiliation with Juice.

Manhattan Beach Farmers Market Celebrates 5th Anniversary!

Yesterday, the Manhattan Beach Farmers Market celebrated it’s fifth anniversary in high-style.  The Market team hired Suzanne Haring, of The Soozie Show, to entertain the crowd.  She built these incredible balloons worn by my poor neglected children.  (Said with sarcasam, of course.  As any mom in Manhattan Beach knows, hitting the Farmers Market with your kids can cost you an arm and a leg.  Bring cash and be prepared to spend it!)

Adding to the festivites was live music (as there is quite often at the market) and the kiddie train was chugging along full of mini passengers.  It was a lovely way to celebrate!

There are several new vendors at the market that really round out the shopping experience at the market.  (I used to sell pizzas at the market, so I’ve had a chance to get to know many of the wonderful people who sell their products at this venue.)

First, I stopped at Grandma Sally’s Kitchen, makers of homemade jelly.  Ah-mazing.  I tried the Mango jelly and went nuts. I then proceeded to buy three flavors, including Mango, Strawberry Balsamic and Berry Blast.  I love that they add “Blessings” into the ingrediants.  I’ll take a few blessings.  Can’t hurt.

Next, we stopped at Homegirl Cafe.

They make insane salads – fruit and vegetable – that are shaken in giant plastic containers.

Heaven, right?

And, finally, my favorite thing about the Manhattan Beach Farmers Market – Bolani East & West Gourmet Afgani Food.  I did not take pictures because I was too busy stuffing my mouth with samples.  They will soon be at our local Costco.  Bolani’s are vegan.  Stuffed with pumpkin or spinach topped with a yummy garlic mint sauce.  It’s the food of the Gods, sent here to Manhattan Beach.  I go every Tuesday to get my fix.  Can’t wait ’till they are at Costco to get them anytime I want.

Our world will be a better place with more Bolani around town!  See you next week at the market!
