HEXBUG Fun & Giveaway!

Do HEXBUGs love hamburgers?

I know a toy is a hit with my kids when they ask to bring it along to dinner at a restaurant.  We were sent two HEXBUG Spider Micro Robotic Creatures for review last week.  The kids loved them!

They even asked to go for a walk in town with the HEXBUG Spiders so they could scare people by walking them on the side walk!  They have grand plans for the bugs on Halloween.

The HEXBUG Spiders are really cool.  They are a robotic creature that is an electro mechanical arachnoid featuring 360 degree steering.  They also have an LED forward eye, and two-channel, user selectable infared remote control.  They retail for $24.99 and can be found at www.HEXBUG.com.

I have a HEXBUG Nano to give away to one lucky reader.

If you’d like to enter to win, please leave a comment below.  To earn an extra entry, please follow me on Twitter:  @MBMomBlogger & tweet this message:  I entered to win @HEXBUG Nano from @MBMomBlogger – you should too: http://wp.me/p1rGlf-nk.

Images from BlogHer 2011& Modify Watch Giveaway

I just returned from BlogHer 2011.  It was awesome, inspiring, fun, exhuasting and informational.  Thought I’d share some pictures from my blogging adventure…

My camera had a hard time focusing on this hippy dippy icy smurf in the dark.  I love the colors in the photo, even if the image makes you a little woozy.  I found this guy at the Clever Girls party.  It was an amazing bash that included a Lady Gaga impersonator and a lot of Smurfs.

My new blogging pal, Caryn Bailey of Rockin Mama, had the best job during the convention.  She got to talk to the Cookie Monster, Elmo and Abby Cadaby on behalf of Playskool.  She did an amazing job interacting with her fuzzy friends.

I stopped by the Cotton Inc. booth and discovered the coolest thing:  they are recycling used jeans and turning them into insulation for homes in New Orleans.

The Dove booth was the tastiest one on the floor.  I had to have a sample.  Seriously.  I wouldn’t be a good blogger if I didn’t.

And then there were these guys.  I don’t even know what to say about them.  Don’t blink, it ends quick.

There was endless swag.  My favorite – the Juice in the City branded Modify Watch we were given at the Clever Girls party.  I already have one, so I’m going to give this one away!

Want it?  Leave me a comment here and you’ll be entered into the contest.  If you want an extra entry, tweet this post and include @MBMomBlogger in your tweet.  I will use Random.org to pick the winner on Friday, August 12th, at 5 pm pst.  You must live within the US in order to qualify for the contest.  Good luck!

Judy Moody and The Not Bummer Summer Ticket Give Away

My kids are totally excited to see Judy Moody and The Not Bummer Summer.  After watching the trailer, so am I!

There are two things I love to do with my kids – read and watch movies together.  Movies like Judy Moody help me encourage the kids to check out chapter books and dig into reading.

I want to share this with you, the readers of Manhattan Beach Momma.  You guys rock!  I have 5 tickets to give way – one group of two, and one group of 3.  The ticket winners will get to go to a “Mega Cool Cookie Party” before attending a private screening of Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer film on Wednesday, June 8th at 4:00 pm in Hollywood. Woo hoo!  Want to win the tickets?  Here’s how:

1.)  Like the ManhattanBeachMomma.com page on Facebook and leave me a note on the wall.

2.) Leave a comment here on the blog and let me know if you’d prefer two tickets or three.

3.) You must do both to be entered into the Random.org drawing which will take place on Friday, May 27th at noon.

Good luck!

Save the Date! Fresh Brothers Diaper Drive

Kristy Kaplon

On Tuesday, April 12th, we held a giant fundraiser at two Fresh Brothers locations (Westlake & Calabasas)  benefiting the Kaplon family.

On March 17th, Brian Kaplon, a young father and husband, was shot and killed by a friend.   Brian’s wife, Kristi, is a mom to two and half year-old daughter, Kloe.  She is also expecting twins in May.  One of the most difficult parts of this story to digest is the fact that the Kaplon’s had no life insurance.  Brian had applied for it, but he was killed before the application could be fully processed.

My friend, Jen Levinson, is Kristi’s cousin and is one of her dear friends.  (Jen is mom to five kids – four of those are twins!)   I learned about what happened to the Kaplan family through Jen.  I could not help but be sickened, saddened and concerned about Kristi, Kloe and the babies.  As a mother of twins, I could not fathom enduring parenthood to baby twins without a spouse.  I had a tough time.  I’m not sure who doesn’t when you have two babies at once!  Jen approached us about doing a fundraiser for the Kaplon’s and we immediately said yes.

It was a beautiful day.  Both stores were insanely busy, but it was well worth the extra effort.  Our staff kicked it into high gear and worked their butts off to make sure the day went smoothly.

I didn’t take any pictures, it didn’t seem right.  But Kristi and Kloe were both there.  People were dining outside on long communal tables.  There was a lot of love and laughter surrounding Kristi and Kloe.  KCBS and KCAL came out to talk with Kristi.  Hopefully the additional media coverage helped channel extra donations for the family.

We raised $2500 for the Kaplon family.  We donated 20% back of all sales from both locations that day.  I am so thrilled that we were able to do this for this young family who is struggling to stay afloat during this difficult time.

As a business owner, as a mother, as a wife, I’m proud that we were able to bring our community together to help this mom out.  Thank you to all who helped us make this happen!
