What I Did During Summer Vacation

It’s been a while since I’ve blogged.  I took a creative personal sabbatical.

In other words, I took a break from writing.  But more on that in another blog post…

In addition, I’ve been busy.  We’ve been busy.

Fresh Brothers made the cover of Pizza Today, and was named “2012 Pizza Today Independent Pizzeria of the Year.”

Pizza Today is our industry trade magazine.  They chose Fresh Brothers as their #1 Indie of the Year out of all the other pizzerias in the US.  What an amazing honor!

And in a round about way, that leads me to this:  I was nominated as one of Circle of Mom’s Top 25 Mompreneur Bloggers.  Would you please take a moment to vote for me?  I’m currently in 11th place.  Which is great.  But I’d love to make it into the top ten.  A girl can dream, right?

When Jessica Gottlieb Speaks, We All Listen.

My Facebook page blew up the other night.  Jessica Gottlieb, a brilliant blogger and new school muckracker, mentioned me and the work that I do for Fresh Brothers:

Wow.  I think that goes down as the best compliment ever.  Period.

And, I guess that means I’ll be seeing you all at BlogHer 2012.  Yehaw!

Thank you, Jessica Gottlieb.

Fresh Brothers on “The Doctors”

Today I get to brag a bit.  Well, maybe it’s not bragging.  My dad always says, “Deborah, it’s not bragging if you can back it up.”  And I’ve got back up!

I’m excited to share this – Fresh Brothers, the business my husband and I co-created, was featured on “The Doctors” last week:

The “Fresh Kids Special” is really good.  The best thing about it is that you really can’t tell that there are veggies mixed into it. Have you tried it? What do you think? More important, what do your kids think?

Own a Small Business? Be wary of Social Media “Experts”

I just have to get this off my chest. It’s seems that at least once or twice a month I hear that so-and-so has decided to open their own business as a Social Media “Expert.”  Ugh.

Malcolm Gladwell, author of The Tipping Point, asserts in his book that in order to become an expert or a professional in any field – be it sports or business – you must study or practice for at least 10,000 hours.  Say it with me – 10,000 hours.

10,000 hours = 417 days.  Whole days.  Like 24 hours straight times 417 days.

Do me a favor?  The next time someone approaches you, a small business owner, and tells you that they are a social media “expert,” ask them how long they’ve had their Twitter account.  Ask them how long they’ve had a Facebook Business Page.

Yah, I thought so.

Here’s the thing – as a small business owner – I get that your time is incredibly valuable.  I also know that money is probably tight.  The lack of money and time makes it real tempting to consider turning over the reigns of your Facebook page and Twitter account to a so-called expert who can do it for you.  I get it.

Here’s why you shouldn’t do it:

1.) Your customers want to hear from you.  Period.  End of story.  They want to know they are chatting with the owner of the company when Tweeting or posting on Facebook.  It matters.

2.) If you feel like you don’t know what you are doing or you don’t know how to do it well, there are resources out there to help you.  Many Chamber of Commerce groups and networking organizations run social media marketing seminars – often for free or at a low cost.  (My friend, Ann Evanston, runs an amazing course that walks you through the entire process of Social Media Marketing.  Great resource.)

3.) While I’m not dissing the entire field of social media marketing “experts,” I have personally experienced this at a small business level:

Many have had limited success with their own business and their social media marketing.  These experts may have done some social media marketing well for their last boss or their business, but it doesn’t mean that their techniques will work for you.  Many of these people often run two or three businesses at a time (like MLM type things) hoping that one of these endeavors will succeed.  I believe your time and money is too valuable to hand it over to someone who is experimenting with a second career.   If they don’t do this full-time, run!

And, a note to those who call themselves “experts,” check and see what your potential new clients’ Facebook and Twitter accounts look like.  I triple pinky-swear to you about this – every single person I’ve met with who claims they are a a social media expert and that they could help our business never, ever checked our Twitter or FB acct.  I’m serious.  I asked each and everyone if they had and they’d sputter and say “no,” but I will after this.  Guess what?  Our Facebook page was noted by Inc. Magazine as one of “20 Awesome Facebook Fan Pages,” alongside national brands.  Shouldn’t they know that ahead of time?

So, even after reading this, and you are thinking about working with someone to amp up or start up your social media marketing, please ask the following questions:

1.)  What makes you an “expert?”  Why should I work with you rather than doing it on my own?

2.) What other forms of social media do you think I should be on with this business?  YoutubePinterest?  Why?

3.) Check their references! Talk to previous clients (and make sure they aren’t friends) to see if they are happy with their results.

4.) Cyber-stalk them for a while.  Follow their Twitter account.  Watch their activity on Facebook.  Do you like what they are doing?  How they handle themselves?  Can you see this person representing your business?

5.)  If you do decide to work with someone, put together a contract with clear expectations about what will be posted, when, where and how.  Do this for a limited time so you can measure your results.

Are you a small business owner? Do you have other tips you’d like to share about working with Social Media experts?  Have you successfully done it yourself?  If so, share with us so we can support you!

America’s Best Donuts

As Homer Simpson lovingly and longingly says, “Mmmmm…. donuts.”

Raised or glazed?  Cake or cruller?  Frosted or filled? Donut or doughnut? How do you do your donuts?

When I was working as a tv producer, I had the opportunity to produce, direct and write a show called “World’s Best Donuts” for the Travel Channel.  Tough job, huh?  I had to come up with a list of the top ten donut joints in the US. Sweet!

Luckily, I didn’t have to travel far to find the best of the best donuts right here in L.A. – Stan’s Doughnuts.

This, my friends, is Stan Berman, owner of Stan’s Doughnuts.  He’s the man behind creations like the peanut butter and fresh banana-stuffed chocolate covered donut topped with chocolate chips called the Huell.  (Named after public television staple Huell Howser.) They are to.die.for.

This past weekend we celebrated Christmas and New Year’s by parking ourselves at our friends’ home in little Holmby Hills, not far from Stan’s in Westwood.  They had never tried Stan’s, so we took a drive and brought home three dozen to feed the house full of kids, teenagers and hungry adults.

That’s the Mariska, named after Mariska Hargitay, from Law and Order.  Her mother, Jayne Mansfield, was a frequent customer of Stan’s, who has been in business for over 40 years.

They were a hit!  The donuts are all light and fluffy, even the cake donuts.  The flavors are fresh and unique, like the peanut butter and jelly donut, or the blueberry cruller.  The shop is an old-school, tiny little place in Westwood that shares space with another restaurant.  One important thing to know about Stan’s is that they do not take credit cards – cash only!  We made that mistake and had to run back to the house to get cash.  Another note – you can taste Stan’s no matter where you live – they ship anywhere within the country!

Have you tried Stan’s?  What kind of donut is your favorite?  Which donut place gets your vote for America’s best donut?

Real California Milk Advisory Board Offers Help & Cash for SoCal Schools

It seems that the quest for fundraising at our local school is never-ending.  And for that, I’m grateful.  Last year, the Manhattan Beach Education Foundation raised 4.4 million dollars.  The funds are being used to pay for 66 teachers, guidance counselors, college and career counselors, librarians, science and enrichment teachers, computers teachers & music teachers.  Amazing, right?  It is.  But it never ends.  Every year we struggle to raise money to keep our schools funded appropriately.

And that is why I am excited to share the “Real Seal Appeal,” a campaign by the California Milk Advisory Board.  They will donating up to 2 million dollars in cash, books & prizes to schools here in Southern California!

California is the epicenter of dairy production.  We lead the state in US production of of milk, butter, ice cream, yogurt and nonfat dry milk.  By purchasing dairy products with the “Real California Milk” seal, you are not only supporting the 1620 family-owned dairy farms here in California, you are also supporting your local school.

Here’s what the seal looks like:
How can you help your school?  Collect the Real California Milk seals from milk and dairy products and then turn them into your teacher.  Each seal is one entry into the sweepstakes for schools.  The more seals collected, the more chances your child’s classroom (and school) has to win.  The teacher then sends in the seals.

The California Milk Advisory Board has partnered up with Scholastic Books to offer the following prizes to participating school districts:

Grand Prize:  Three winning schools with receive $20,000 plus a Wii Fit game for every child in the winning classroom.

Second Place:  Three winning schools will receive $10,000 plus a Wii Fit game for every child in the winning classroom.

Third Place:  Three winning schools will receive $5,000 plus a Wii Fit game for every child in the winning classroom.

Runner Ups:  2,595 winning schools will receive $500 prizes.

Here are the local South Bay participating school districts:  Manhattan Beach Unified, Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified & Torrance.

For additional information, please visit the Real Seal Appeal! Home Page or visit RealCaliforniaMilk.com. You can also follow Real California Milk on Twitter: @RealCalifMilk and ‘Like’ them on Facebook: Facebook.com/realcaliforniamilk.

The Sugar Girl’s Mocki Rolls

I love sharing new products with my readers.   When a friend told me that she had started a new venture called The Sugar Girl, I was more than happy to take a bite look!

The Sugar Girl has created these amazing Mocki Rolls, aka “Sweet Sushi.”  As you may know, Maki is a type of sushi, raw fish rolled in rice, wrapped in seaweed.  The Sugar Girl’s “Mocki” then is a play on words, of course.  She creates gorgeous mock sushi rolls made entirely from typical ingredients used in high-end baking.

They look great, so you might be wondering how they taste.  Amazing!  The Sugar Girl’s Mocki Rolls are the real deal – wonderful taste, clever packaging and they look incredible.  They are perfect for party or wedding favors.

You can win one of her party platters for your next event (featured in the upper left corner of the photo) valued at $75.00  by “liking” her Facebook page and then leaving a comment here.  A winner will be randomly chosen next Friday, October 14th, at 5:00 by Random.org.

Good luck!

Happy Birthday, Jen Levinson (aka Jen’s List)

Today, I’m using my blog to wish a dear friend Happy Birthday!

Many of you living Los Angeles may subscribe to her daily emails – Jen’s List.  If you don’t, you should.  Go here to do so, now!

Jen’s List provides subscribers with tips, tricks and leads on all things relevant to life in SoCal.  You’ll find nanny leads.  Recipes.  Ideas for ways to get your kids to eat healthier.  Houses for rent.  Houses for sale.  Computer experts.  Community fundraisers.  The list (pun intended) goes on and on.

Besides being an amazing resource for many people, she is also an incredibly generous person.  She uses her power wisely.  For example, she chooses to help a lot of non-profits and organizations in need by helping to spread the word about their fundraisers.

And, then, there’s Kristy Kaplon.  Kristy, a young mom of a darling toddler, and pregnant with twins, lost her husband who was tragically shot and killed by an acquaintance.  Jen has been instrumental in helping to organize many fundraisers on behalf of the Kaplon family.  The one we did through Fresh Brothers together was very successful.

Again, helping Kristy is just one of the many amazing philanthropic efforts that Jen takes on.  She’s just incredible.

And, oh, I forgot to mention this – she is the mom of five kids!  She has two sets of identical boy twins, too.

So Happy Birthday, my friend!  You are an inspiration to me.

XO

If Steve Jobs Changed Your Life, Watch This:

I bought an Iphone today.  Before he died.  After I left the store, I walked down the sidewalk past the UPS guy.  He was looking at his iPhone, and he looked stunned.

“Steve Jobs is dead,” he said.

“But I just bought an iPhone,” I said.

It seemed incredibly strange.  The timing.  The fact that I just bought an iPhone.  And the loss.

I didn’t know Steve Jobs, personally.  But it feels like I did in a way.

I found this video, shot at Stanford University during commencement,  incredibly moving.  I hope you did too.

Thank you, Mr. Jobs. Thank you for all that you’ve left us with.
