Children’s Television: Everybody Loves Elmo! (Pt.2)

He’s red.  He’s furry.  He’s a loveable monster.  And that’s why we all love Elmo.  He’s an international icon, thanks to the man behind the monster, Kevin Clash.

I recently wrote about the Fred Rogers Memorial Scholarship Fund, which celebrates Mister Rogers positive influence on children’s media.  That tradition continues today, thanks to PBS Kids, and the many amazing programs that the networks produces.

Kevin Clash’s life as the man behind Elmo is captured in a new documentary titled Being Elmo:  A Puppeteers Journey.  Directed by Constance Marks, the film will premiere on Independant Lens in April of 2012.

During the press tour, Kevin brought out Elmo so the journalists and bloggers could take pictures with the pair.  Below, Elmo held on to a pregnant woman’s belly and exclaimed “See you soon!”

Clash is an Emmy Award winning master puppeteer who has given life to Elmo and many other Sesame Street characters.  It was amazing (and chilling, in a good way) to watch him “be” Elmo.

Kevin Clash is a gentle and sweet man and you can clearly see his personality reflected in Elmo.  At the end of a question and answer session, Elmo sang us a song.

And, finally, Elmo created a special message for my children, Nathan and Ryann.  For one day, I was the perfect mom in my home thanks to Elmo!

Children’s Television: The Legacy of Mister Rogers, Pt. 1

“If you could only sense how important you are to the lives of those you meet; how important you can be to the people you may never even dream of. There is something of yourself that you leave at every meeting with another person.”
Fred Rogers

Sunday was all about children’s television for our family.  We were invited to attend an event at the Television Academy Foundation honoring four recipients of the Fred Rogers Memorial Scholarship.  The scholarship is a tribute to the legacy of Fred Rogers (Mister Rogers Neighborhood), and celebrates his positive influence on children’s media.

I grew up watching Mister Rogers, and so did my kids.  We often watched the show in reruns during lazy rainy days at home.  Mister Rogers laid the ground work for shows like the “Electric Company” and “Sesame Street.”  (More about Sesame Street in part two of this post!)

Ernst & Young finances the scholarship fund, which is incredibly generous of them.

Fred Roger’s widow, Joanne, was on hand to present the awards to the winners.

She is as lovely as you’d expect someone to be who was married to Mister Rogers!

Remember this guy?

David Newell, who played Mr. McFeely on the Mister Roger’s show, hosted the event.

Allison Ashley Arm ("So Random," Disney Channel), Kelsey Chow ("Pair of Kings," Disney XD), Bradley Steven Perry ("Good Luck Charlie," Disney Channel), Ryan Ochoa ("Pair of Kings," Disney XD)

Four Disney stars were also there to present the awards to the winners:  Seth Ring, Montana State University; Daniel Flannery, Tufts University; Christina Farrell, NYU; Aubry Alvarez, Northwestern University.

Congratulations to the winners.  I expect big things from you in the future!

In part 2 of this post, I’m going to give you an insiders look at the genius behind everyone’s favorite red monster:  ELMO!

(I was not compensated for this post.  I was invited to attend the event with my children and we were treated to ice cream & cookies!)
