Disneynature’s Chimpanzee

Meet Oscar the chimp.

Look at that ‘lil guys face.  How can you not want to reach out and make a connection with him?

Chimpanzee, the film featuring Oscar, is a true-life adventure produced by Disneynature.  It opens appropriately on Earth Day, which is April 20, 2012.

The films follows the life of young Oscar, a funny and energetic little chimpanzee, who lives in the forests of Africa with his  group of pals, his mom, Isha, and the group leader, Freddy.  Oscar’s life is turned upside down when his family and friends are confronted by a rival band of chimps.  Freddy’s life then changes in ways that are completely unexpected.

I have a bucket list, like many of us, I suspect.  And one thing on that list is to go to Africa, where I can view chimps in the wild.

For every person that sees Chimpanzee in the movie theatre during opening week, Disneynature will make a donation to the Jane Goodall Institute to help protect chimpanzees and their habitats in the wild.  How wonderful is that?

Good luck, Oscar.

  4. I had heard about this project. Looks like a beautiful movie. Working on my own project of documenting the Mustang Makeover process and how it is possible to build relationships with horses showed me a new way to look at working with the animal kingdom. This movie also seems to be looking at the same kind of thing. The idea that we are not the only creatures that build societies and think and care for each other is really so exciting when you think about how maybe All creatures can work together to build a more balanced and successful world.

I saw the trailer for this film last month and it immediately went on my “must see” list. Stories about animals can be more moving than ones with humans! Thanks for sharing this, Debbie. My family will be sure to see and support this film.

  18. I can't wait to watch this! I love all of the Disneynature films and having majored in anthropology, I have a special interest in this one. Can't wait for next month! Thanks for sharing.

  19. Jamie says:

Oh my gosh, this story makes me cry every time I hear it. My husband was sobbing during the trailer. It reminds us so much of when he went along to pick up Samuel in Ethiopia. Father-son adoption story- beautiful! And I love chimps, so much like us. I hope people see the true humanity in this story and do more to protect their natural habitat. It is such a shame how in danger they really are.

I had no idea about donation to the Jane Goodall Institute – just one more reason to keep it on our lists! I also love that you have seeing these marvelous creatures on your bucket list. An African adventure popped onto our lists very recently – courtesy of the kids :-)

I saw a preview of this movie last night on Frozen Planet. Oscar looks so cute! The photography was astounding and the documentation that was obtained thanks to Dr. Goodall's current and previous studies is so heartwarming.

  26. These are such evocative photos. I have not heard of this film, but it interests me. I imagine a time in the future when we have a different understanding of these amazing creatures. Right now there are people who respect them (and many who don't), but I think it's still in terms of "how are they like us?" Maybe there's a whole new level on which to appreciate them.
